Ireland is well known for the warmth and hospitality it offers to visitors, and for its outstanding natural beauty. We return to Westport in County Mayo, to enjoy the spectacular scenery for which the West of Ireland is famous. Westport is one of the most attractive towns in Ireland and stands on the edge of Clew Bay,  said to have 365 islets and islands, one for every day of the year.

Itinerary

(DAY 1) Sunday 29th April

Taxi pick-up from your home to the coach. Drive through the Midlands to The Kinmel Hotel in North Wales for an overnight stay with evening meal.

(DAY 2) Monday 30th April

We are away early and crossing Anglesey to the port of Holyhead for a 9 o’clock ferry to Dublin. Breakfast will be taken on board, and we arrive in Ireland at around midday. We drive west, via Mullingar and Longford, to reach Westport by the end of the afternoon.

(DAY 3) Tuesday 1st May

We will be joined by a local guide for a tour full of wonderful scenery, setting off along the shore of Clew Bay past Croagh Patrick, the Holy Mountain, and through the Doo Lough Valley. We will explore the Connemara National Park, and return through the Irish lakes with a stop in the pretty village of Cong. It was here, in 1951, that “The Quiet Man” starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara was filmed.

(DAY 4) Wednesday 2nd May

We will explore the Ballycroy National Park, which covers a vast unspoilt wilderness dominated by the Nephin Beg mountain range. Then we head onto Achill Island via the causeway across Achill Sound. Achill boasts some of the best scenery in Ireland, marked by rugged mountains and peat bogs. There are unspoilt beaches, and towering cliffs that provide a home to a vast number of sea birds.

(DAY 5) Thursday 3rd May

A morning excursion to Foxford Woollen Mills, traditional wool manufacturers since 1892. One of Ireland’s last working mills, its master craftspeople create beautiful pieces that are sold all over the world. Enjoy a self-guided tour and visit the shop and café. We return to Westport where the afternoon can be spent exploring this Georgian town on the banks of the Carrowebeg River.

(DAY 6) Friday 4th May

We head across Ireland, calling at the National Museum of Irish Country Life in the grounds of Turlough Park House, and surrounded by attractive gardens. An exhibition tells how the people of rural Ireland lived in the hundred years between the end of the Great Famine and the 1950s. We continue to the Talbot Hotel on the outskirts of Dublin for the final night of the tour, with dinner included.

(DAY 7) Saturday 5th May

We leave the Hotel early and take the ferry from Dublin, with breakfast on board. Arriving in Holyhead, we return to Sussex and rendezvous with taxis home to your door.
