Overview

After two highly successful winter tours to Austria we are returning to the beautiful Tirol region, where we will be staying at the family-run Hotel Plankenhof in the village of Pill, about a half-hour drive from Innsbruck. Our new itinerary has something for everyone including a Castle, tram and train rides through a wintery landscape, apple strudel making, cheese, schnapps, a sleigh ride and a visit to Austria’s highest waterfall.  Please note that this tour is not suitable for those with walking difficulties.

Your Holiday Hotel

The Hotel Plankenhof has comfortable, traditionally furnished rooms with satellite tv and a bathroom with hairdryer. There is free Wi-fi, a lift and a sauna. The main building dates from 1460 and the Hotel has been in the Enzenberg family for 11 generations.

Read the reviews if you get a chance. They are generally very good.

Itinerary

(DAY 1) Saturday 19th January

An early start, with taxi pick-up from your home to the coach to join your drivers and fellow passengers. Enjoy tea or coffee and biscuits on the journey to Folkestone. Eurotunnel to France then drive to our overnight hotel in the Saarbrucken/Saarlouis area with dinner and breakfast included.

(DAY 2) Sunday 20th January

Today we head south through Bavaria and drive over the Fern Pass to join the Inn Valley, and continue to our hotel in Pill. Enjoy a welcome drink before dinner.

(DAY 3) Monday 21st January

After breakfast we visit Innsbruck, with a guided tour to see some of the highlights including the Hofkirche and the iconic Golden Roof. Next stop will be Ambras Castle, a Renaissance Palace, perched on a hill above the City. The lavish Spanish Hall is adorned with 27 portraits of Hapsburg rulers and has an elaborate inlaid wooden ceiling. To round off the day we take a ride on the Stubaitalbahn, a narrow-gauge tram line opened in 1904. On the 11-mile journey between Innsbruck and Fulpmes you will pass larch forests and snow-laden Alpine meadows.

(DAY 4) Tuesday 22nd January

We begin today with a visit to Alpbach which, with its authentic wooden houses, has been voted “The Most Beautiful Village in Austria”.   Then to the medieval walled town of Rattenberg, the provincial capital of glass and crystal, where we visit one of the showrooms. Afterwards we will enjoy an “Apfelstrudel” baking demonstration and taste a piece with coffee.

(DAY 5) Wednesday 23rd January

We take a drive around the Wilder Kaiser Mountains, travelling via the pretty lakeside town of Walchsee and calling at the “Wilder Kaeser” Cheese Museum for a tour and tasting. On the way back to the Hotel we will stop at a Tyrolean Schnaps Museum to learn how the famous drink is distilled and enjoy a taste of this local “firewater”.

(DAY 6) Thursday 24th January

This morning a horse drawn sleigh ride (either on skis or wheels depending on the weather) takes you through through a wintery landscape. In the afternoon we drive to Mittersill and board a train on the scenic narrow-gauge railway, the Pinzgau Lokalbahn. Arriving at the Krimml Falls, one of Europe’s largest and steepest waterfalls, we will take a guided torchlight walk to the foot of the illuminated frozen falls. We will then have dinner at Hanke’s restaurant before re-joining the coach.

(DAY 7) Friday 25th January

Departure after breakfast, returning to our overnight hotel in Germany.

(DAY 8) Saturday 26th January

It’s time to head back to Sussex, where taxis will be waiting to take you home to your door.
