Overview

The English Lake District is a beautiful place to visit at any time of year, but especially in the autumn, when the leaves are turning from green to gold, and the roads are a little quieter. It is hard to beat The Inn on the Lake for location, comfort, food and service, and we are pleased to be returning to the pretty village of Glenridding for a third time.

Your Holiday Hotel

THE INN ON THE LAKE is a 4-star hotel that has one of the most spectacular settings in the Lake District, with lawns sweeping to the shores of Ullswater. Itinerary

Day 1: Once everyone is on board the coach we will drive through the Midlands and Lancashire.  The final leg of the journey takes us over the Cumbrian fells and along the shore of Ullswater to our Hotel in Glenridding.

Days 2-5

Included excursions will take you to some of Lakeland’s top attractions:

DOVE COTTAGE     This little cottage was where William Wordsworth wrote some of the greatest poetry in the English language, and his sister Dorothy kept her famous ‘Grasmere Journal’, now on display in the Museum.

ACORN BANK     A National Trust house and garden, best known for its collection of herbs and traditional fruit orchards. For the first time visitors can now explore the ground floor of Acorn Bank House.

THE KIRKSTONE PASS     Connecting Ambleside to Patterdale in the Ullswater Valley, Kirkstone is the Lake District’s highest pass open to motor traffic and offers some truly spectacular views.

HILLTOP     We discover the tale of Beatrix Potter at her former home, with its pretty cottage garden. Full of her favourite things, the house appears as if Beatrix had just stepped out for a walk.

MOUNTAIN GOAT     We spend a day on one of the famous Mountain Goat minibuses, for a classic tour of the Western Lakes, following a route pioneered by the Romans. Your knowledgeable driver-guide will take you through mountain passes; Hardknott and Wrynose, which are among the steepest in Britain. The tour includes a narrow gauge train ride and a visit to the grounds of 14th century Muncaster Castle. Bring a cushion, as it can get a little bumpy!

BLACKWELL     Overlooking Windermere, Blackwell is one of the country’s finest Art & Crafts historic houses. It was built around 1900 as a holiday home for a wealthy Manchester brewer, and is a real hidden gem, with most of the original decorative features having survived intact.

Day 6: A day to relax at the Hotel and enjoy Glenridding, from where there are plenty of walks available. Take a gentle stroll beside the Lake or tackle the arduous ascent of Helvellyn, one of England’s highest mountains. There is a boat service around Ullswater and to the National Trust waterfall at Aira Force.

Day 7: We set off for home after breakfast, with happy memories of our holiday in the Lake District, and reach Sussex late afternoon for taxis to your door.
