2018 is an exciting and important year for the maritime city of Liverpool. At the end of May an international fleet of tall ships will arrive at the start of the Three Festivals Tall Ships Regatta. The city will also host the fabulous Terracotta Warriors, returning to the UK for the first time in over a decade. We are pleased to offer a choice of departures, with a four and a five day tour, each providing two full days in the City, and including a visit to the Exhibition at Liverpool’s World Museum.
CHINA’S FIRST EMPEROR & THE TERRACOTTA WARRIORS
This exhibition, at the Liverpool World Museum, will be the first time in over ten years that these spectacular warriors from the tomb of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, have been brought to the UK. His vast burial site was discovered in northwest China in 1974, and the story of the amazing Terracotta Warriors will be displayed, alongside spectacular artefacts that have never been seen in this country before.
Your Holiday Hotel
THE MERCURE HAYDOCK HOTEL is located close to the motorway, surrounded by landscaped gardens and just 20 miles from Liverpool. The 4-star standard is reflected in the furnishings and mock Georgian style of this modern hotel. There is a leisure club with a good sized swimming pool, sauna and steam room. Bedrooms are bright and modern, with free Wi-Fi, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. There are plenty of ground floor rooms, available on request.
Day 1 Taxi pick up from your home to the coach. We drive through the Midlands for a lunchtime stop at Trentham Estate in Staffordshire. There is a large garden centre, a shopping village, and a lake set in a ‘Capability’ Brown landscape. You can also visit the stunning Italian Gardens, for which there is an admission charge. We reach our hotel by the end of the afternoon, allowing time to relax or take a stroll before dinner.
Days 2-3 Both days are available for you to “do your own thing” in Liverpool, where there will be plenty of activity around the Albert Dock and along the waterfront by the Mersey. Admire the graceful masts of the Tall Ships and step on board some of these amazing vessels from all over the world. Submerge yourself in Liverpool’s seafaring past at the Maritime Museum, see the iconic Liver Building, visit the Beatles Story or the new British Music Experience, take the open-top sightseeing bus to one of the city’s two cathedrals, or a River Explorer Cruise on the legendary Mersey Ferry. The choice is yours; there is so much to see and do in Liverpool that two days will not be enough! Please note that admissions to the attractions mentioned above are not included. On one of these days there will be a visit, with admission included, to the Terracotta Warriors Exhibition (see below).
Day 4 After an action-packed two days in Liverpool, today we slow the pace of life right down with a scenic cruise through the Douglas Valley on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. We drive to Wigan Pier to join the friendly crew from Kittywake Canal Cruises aboard one of their wide beam barges with comfortable seating, wc, and a well-stocked bar. We will leave the industrial landscape behind, and enjoy a buffet lunch served as we cruise at a leisurely 4mph through the Lancashire countryside. It’s called “taking it easy”!
Final day After breakfast we will leave Lancashire and make our way home to Sussex, arriving for late afternoon taxis.
