Overview

Lake Annecy is surely the most delightful lake in France, in the spectacular Haute-Savoie region, surrounded by Europe’s highest mountains. Tony Pragnell, who willbe accompanying this tour, has devised a new itinerary with superb excursions, all included in the tour price! The travelling days are enhanced by pleasant landscapes, Champagne country via Reims to Troyes, and then through Burgundy vineyards towards the mountains and lakes of Haute Savoie. The shorter journey days allow for a relaxing lunchtime in the mediaeval town of Beaune on day two. Andon our return we spend lunchtime in Nuits St Georges.

Your Holiday Hotel

Hotel Les Grillons plays an important part in this relaxing holiday. There are just thirty rooms, so we have the hotel virtually to ourselves. Run by a charming young family, there is an ambience of tranquillity here, with a pleasant garden, outdoor pool, mountain backdrop, just200 metres to the lake. Les Grillons has built a reputation for its food. Chef Sebastian produces delicious contemporary French cuisine, and the service is always impeccable.

Itinerary

(DAY 1) Saturday 27th May

We take a pleasant route through Picardy, to the charming city of Troyes, capital of the Champagne region. We stay at Mercure Troyes Centre. The mediaeval lanes of Troyes make an ideal venue to dine out on a summer’s evening.

(DAY 2) Sunday 28th May

Buffet breakfast at our hotel, and then a drive into the Burgundy region with an extended lunch stop in the historic walled town of Beaune. We continue through impressive scenery, before reaching the lakeside at Annecy, arriving at Hotel Les Grillons at the end of the afternoon. Our hosts, Aurelie and Sebastian, will be waiting to welcome us. Recent additions at the hotel include a baby (for Aurelie) and a lift. Evening dinner and breakfast are included throughout our six night stay.

(DAY 3) Monday 29th May

A late start today. Scenic drive to the summit of Col de Aravis, with a glimpse of Mont Blancin the distance. We have our lunch stop at the top of the pass and then continue, via the beautiful scenery of Col de Croix Fry, to the little town of Thones. In the countryside on the edge of Thones, we find the small Museum of the French Resistance in Haute Savoie. We have a guide in English, and a film with English sub-titles. There is also a dedicated cemetery alongside.

(DAY 4) Tuesday 30th May

A day in Annecy, its mediaeval quarter laced with canals, flower covered bridges, pastel facades, and old arcaded streets. Tuesday is market day, a colourful atmosphere and a great illustration of the local produce and tempting delicacies. We include a boat trip on the lake, and end the afternoon with a drive to Col de Forclaz, where paragliders leap and soar among the mountains.

(DAY 5) Wednesday 31st May

Two new visits are combined today. We begin at one of the natural wonders of theFrench Alps. Just a short drive from Annecy, the river has carved out the Gorges du Fier. Wecan take the suspended walkway above the rushing river, and venture deep into the gorge withthe River flowing at its base. This afternoon we go nearby Vaulx, a small village in unspoilt countryside, between two large alpine lakes. Here we find Jardins-Secrets, an enchanting combination of gardens and architecture, with surprises, ideas, audacious creations, and a family history to discover.
