We are pleased to offer this Tony Pragnell tour for the second year running. Enjoy a trip on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, Roman History and great Lakeland scenery with the Mountain Goat, with Tony as your guide. The tour is based at the four-star Crown Hotel in Wetheral, a pleasant village in Cumbria, perfect for exploring the history and landscapes of the Border Country.

The Crown was once a coaching inn and is now a four-star hotel where we enjoy delicious food and cosy comfort. Facilities include indoor pool and leisure centre, charming restaurantand traditional bar. There is no lift, with most of the bedrooms being on the first and second floors.

(DAY 1) Thursday 21st September

Taxi pick-up from your home. We travel through the Midlands, Lancashire and over the Cumbrian fells to our Hotel in Wetheral, a pretty village close to Carlisle.

(DAY 2) Friday 22nd September

Our excursion into the Northumberland National Park takes us to Kielder Water. We have arranged a boat cruise and there will be time in the cafe for lunch. The drive will briefly touch Scotland, and we will enjoy early autumn views of this wild and wonderful Border country.

(DAY 3) Saturday 23rd September

We drive alongside Hadrian’s Wallto the most impressive section at Walltown Craggs, visit The Roman Army Museum, and continue though pleasant scenery to Hexham for lunch. Then we follow the Roman Military Road to Vindolanda, one of Europe’s most important Roman sites.

(DAY 4) Sunday 24th September

An exciting day among the Northern Lakes, with the popular Mountain Goat Tour Company, using their minibuses and expert driver/guides for a spectacular Ten Lakes Tour, discovering high passes and scenic dales, dramatic Lake District scenery where coaches cannot go!

(DAY 5) Monday 25th September

To Carlisle Station to board our train for a 72-mile journey through remarkable scenery on the Settle/Carlisle Railway. Meandering through the traquil Eden Valley, the line climbs into the remote Yorkshire Dales at Garsdale Head. With great views of the fells and peaks we cross the spectacular 24-span Ribblehead Viaduct before arriving in Skipton, gateway to the Dales. Time to explore this bustling market town before following the Ribble Valley to the Foxfields Country House Hotel.

(DAY 6) Tuesday 26th September

We travel home with a break at Trentham Gardens. There are various lunch venues, independent retailers and a Garden Centre. We complete the journey back to Sussex where taxis await.
