With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe, the story is based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux. It opens in Paris in 1911 at an auctioning of the contents of the Paris Opera House, one of the contents include a chandelier in which the auctioneer proceeds to tell the story of the legend of the Phantom of the Opera. The audience is transported back to a period in time when the Opera House was at the height of its powers and claimed by many to be inhabited by a ghost or Phantom. The Phantom falls in love with a chorus girl and the love story begins.
