Overview

Widely known as a Statesman and Prime Minister during World War II, Winston Churchill was also an army officer, historian, writer and artist. What is less well known is that the Churchill family had enduring connections with the Isle of Wight. We take the ferry from Southampton to Cowes, where the story begins in 1873 when Churchill’s father met, fell in love with and proposed to a beautiful American, Jenny Jerome. We will follow the ‘Churchill Trail’ through some of the Island’s towns and villages to discover some of the key places associated with the family. We will also visit Mottistone Gardens, one of the most peaceful and magical gardens on the Isle of Wight. Winston often visited his friend Major ‘Jack’ Seely who lived in the Elizabethan manor house. Seely was a cavalry officer in the Great War and his famous horse, Warrior, provided inspiration for the book, stage play and file ‘War Horse’.
