Overview

Join Mark for another in his ‘Fascinating Facts’ series of excursions which today will be exploring the vibrant River Thames. We wil head for the South Bank in central London from where, after a coffee stop, we will set off on a journey taking in the main River crossings and looking at the history and development of the Thames, the buildings and industries that grew up along its banks and the people who worked in them. Driving through the Isle of Dogs we reach Island Gardens, a charming riverside park that inspired Canaletto’s famous 18th Century painting, “A View of Greenwich from the River”. Either walk through the foot tunnel, opened in 1902 and lined with 200,000 glazed white tiles (a walk of about 400 yards) or stay on the coach and drive through the Blackwall Tunnel to Greenwich, where there will be time to find lunch. To round off the day we will drive through the revitalised Docklands and take a river trip – on the Woolwich Free Ferry !
